There’s a reason breakfast is known as the most important meal of the day.  But just grabbing a doughnut from the office kitchen or having a bowl of cereal that is full of sugar doesn’t count.  Here’s some healthy breakfast food that you can try as an alternative to that bowl of sugar puffs you normally have.

Eggs

Eggs make are a great breakfast food to start your day with.  They’re simple to make and can be cooked in a variety of ways so you don’t get bored of having the same thing every day.  Eggs are a good source of protein which helps you build muscle and keeps you feeling full for longer as protein takes longer to break down and digest.  This means you’re not tempted to have a quick snack before lunch.  Other health benefits include being a great source of choline, which is vital for having a healthy brain and liver.  Egg yolks also contain antioxidants that help keep your eyes healthy by assisting in preventing certain disorders like cataracts.

Fruit and Berries

When you’re someone who has to get up and go in the morning it can be hard to fit a full breakfast in.  This makes fruit and quick and easy breakfast food to eat when you don’t have much time to spare.  Lots of fruits are high in vitamin C which keeps your skin looking clean and healthy.  Some fruits like bananas are also good sources of potassium.  Potassium helps with water retention and can reduce high blood pressure.  Berries are also good for you being high in antioxidants and fibre, which helps to keep you feeling full.  Plus, if you don’t have time to eat anything, you can prepare and blend fruit and berries into a smoothie for you to drink.

Greek Yoghurt

If you’re looking for a quick breakfast food that isn’t too heavy Greek yoghurt is a good option to try.  Greek yoghurt has more protein than regular yoghurt and contains fewer calories, making it a great healthy alternative.  Some types have probiotics in them which can aid digestion.  To make your yoghurt more interesting try topping it with fruit, berries, and/or nuts.  It’s still healthy but is even tastier to eat.

Wholemeal toast

Wholemeal bread is much more healthy than white bread, it is a breakfast food that is full of fibre and complex carbohydrates.  Carbs are digested slowly and therefore result in slow-release energy.  This means you don’t get tired as quickly.  Obviously toast can be a little boring by itself.  So, why not pair it with some eggs to add some protein to your breakfast.  You might roll your eyes, but avocado on toast is a healthy pairing to, after all avocado is a superfood.  If you prefer something a little sweeter in the morning then give it a go with peanut butter and banana.

Coffee

Now, drinking too much coffee isn’t healthy, but a couple of cups a day has been shown to have significant health benefits.  So, if nothing else having a cup of coffee for breakfast is better than nothing.  Drinking coffee can have a myriad of health benefits, such as lowering the risks of heart disease, liver disease, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers.  Obviously, it is also high in caffeine which helps to keep you alert and gives you an energy boost.

Hopefully this has given you some ideas of where to start when trying to make a healthy breakfast.  Try these out and see if you notice a difference in your energy and mood.
